15 Tools to Optimize Ecommerce Images

Does your website have an acceptable load time? Images usually account for most of the downloadable bytes on a page. Optimizing your images can yield a large boost in your website’s performance, helping to improve page ranking as well as shopping experience.

To test your web page and get suggestions to make it faster, try Google’s PageSpeed Insights and Yahoo’s YSlow. Also be sure to review Google’s image optimization checklist.

Here is a list of tools to optimize your images. There are online tools and desktop applications. Nearly all of the tools are free.

Smush.it. Smush.it is an online image optimization tool from Yahoo Developer Network. Shush.it is a lossless tool, which means it optimizes an image without changing its look or visual quality. Smush.it can process JPG, GIF, and PNG images that are up to one megabyte in size. There is no registration or daily quota. Price: Free.

PunyPNG. PunyPNG is a free online tool that supports JPG, GIF and PNG. Compress up to 20 files, with a max of 500KB each. PunyPNG has a side-by-side benchmark comparison against other tools. Pro plan offers higher compression and optional “lossy” (e.g. slight quality reductions) optimizations, with a 1MB max file size for 5,000 images per month. Price: Free. Trimage. Trimage is a cross-platform tool for optimizing PNG and JPG files. Trimage uses OptiPNG, Pngcrush, AdvanceCOMP, and Jpegoptim, depending on the file type. All image files are compressed on the highest available lossless-compression levels. Available for Linux and other Unix systems. Price: Free.

ImageOptim. ImageOptim is an application for Mac that optimizes PNG, JPG, and GIF images. To do so, ImageOptim integrates a batch of tools, including PNGOUT, Pngcrush, Zopfli, JpegOptim, and Gifsicle. ImageOptim finds best compression parameters and removes unnecessary comments and color profiles. Price: Free.

Kraken.io. Kraken was built with the purpose of being a single, easy-to-use tool to optimize images. It offers several methods for resizing and cropping images, lossless and lossy options, and has a WordPress plugin. Store optimized images directly in Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure, and Rackspace Cloud Files. Price: Basic Web interface is free. Pro plans start at $9 per month.

JPEGMini. JPEGmini is a photo compression application that significantly reduces (up to 80 percent) the size of photographs, while preserving their full resolution and quality. JPEGmini Pro supports photos up to 50 megapixels and includes a plugin for Adobe Lightroom. Price: Lite is free; Standard is $19.99; Pro is $149.

PNGOUTWin. PNGOUTWin is an application for Windows that uses its own proprietary algorithms for compression. Convert and compress to PNG from TIFF, GIF, BMP, and other formats, or optimize your existing PNG files. Compress one or more files, and drag and drop multiple files on the main window. Price: Personal is $14.95, Corporate is $29.95.

RIOT. RIOT (Radical Image Optimization Tool) is a free image optimization program for Windows to visually adjust compression parameters while keeping minimum file size. Compare the original image next to the optimized image in real-time and instantly see the resulting file size. It features batch support for multiple files, image adjustment tool, color reduction, and more. Price: Free.

PNGOptimizer. PNGOptimizer is a small Windows program that cleans and reduces PNG files. It also converts other lossless image formats (BMP, GIF, TGA) into PNG. PNGOptimizer has a simple drag-and-drop interface and creates easily available PNG screenshots. Price: Free.

CompressNow. Compressnow is a free online tool that supports GIF, JPG, and PNG. Simply upload an image up to 9MB, select the compression level, and view the results. Price: Free.

PNGGauntlet. PNGGauntlet is a PNG shrinking application for Windows. It combines PNGOUT, OptiPNG, and DeflOpt to create the small lossless PNGs. PNGGauntlet converts JPG, GIF, TIFF, and BMP files to PNG. Price: Free.

TinyPNG. TinyPNG is an online tool that provides lossy compression to reduce the file size of your PNG files. By selectively decreasing the number of colors in the image, fewer bytes are required to store the data. TinyPNG also offers a plugin for Photoshop, for Windows and Mac. Price: Free.
