Chart of the Week: February Consumer Price Index Rise

When sales slip and consumers' confidence in the state of the national economy falls, ecommerce business owners might think about slashing prices. But new statistics showed that prices for many of the items consumers purchase actually rose in February 2009.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said that the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers, an important measurement for the state of the economy, actually rose 0.5 percent in February before seasonal adjustments.

As an example, apparel, which is a popular with online merchants, had its index rise 1.3 percent in February 2009 compared to the prior month. And January 2009 had also represented a 0.3 percent rise in prices over December 2008.
