Chart of the Week: Number of Affluent Households Fell in 2008

 

The total number of U.S. households with a net worth of more than $500,000 fell some 5.1 percent in 2008, after peaking in the prior year.

"Due to economic pressures, the number of affluent households in the U.S. ... dropped last year, falling from 16.4 million in 2007 to 15.6 million in 2008," reported eMarketer based on information from TNS Media Intelligence.

In 2007, American affluence reach a peak, as most Americans enjoyed a time of unprecedented financial growth which was larger than the dot com boom of the last decade. Unfortunately, as the economy cycled into recession, many households lost net worth.
