Chart of the Week: Walmart’s Revenue Dwarfs Google, Amazon, eBay

For this Chart of the Week, we compare the gross sales of the world's largest physical retailer against three of the largest web-only businesses. The information used in the chart was taken from Yahoo! Finance. The chart compares gross annual revenue of Walmart, Google, eBay, and Amazon for the 2007 and 2008 fiscal years. For Google, eBay and Amazon, the fiscal year ends on Dec. 31. For Walmart, the year ends on Jan. 31.

We chose to compare these companies because they represent the largest brick-and-mortar retailer against some of the most prominent online-only retailers and against the largest search engine.

In the 12-month period ending January 31, 2009, Walmart's gross revenue was approximately $405.6 billion, up $26.8 billion from the $378.8 billion it grossed the prior year.

Google’s gross sales were $21.7 billion in the fiscal year ending Dec. 31, 2008, a $5.1 billion increase from the previous year. Google makes money largely through pay-per-click ads on its search engine and in its content network.

Amazon, the world’s largest online-only retailer, grossed $19.1 billion in the fiscal year ending Dec. 31, 2008, which was $4.3 billion more than the previous year.

eBay grossed $8.5 billion in the fiscal year ending Dec. 31, 2008 and $7.6 billion for the year ending Dec. 31, 2007.

Walmart’s $405.6 billion in gross sales for the fiscal year ended Jan. 31, 2009 was more than Google’s, Amazon’s, and eBay’s combined.
