18 Ecommerce Crowdfunding Success Stories

In “9 Equity Crowdfunding Sites to Finance your Business,” my article last week, I outlined leading crowdfunding sites that offer equity stakes in startups and small businesses. As a result of the Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act, small businesses can now generally solicit investments from accredited (wealthy) investors. Once Title III of the JOBS Act goes into effect, anyone will be able to invest through a crowdfunding site.

Here is a list of successful capital raises through crowdfunding sites. All of these businesses have ecommerce aspects. There are online shopping and deal sites, online tools, and ecommerce platforms. The dollar amounts raised are between $500,000 and $5 million.

Dealflicks offers movie ticket and concession deals for up to 60 percent off. It partners directly with movie theaters to fill empty seats. Dealflicks has raised $1.5 million on Wefunder.

Asseta

Asseta is an online marketplace for companies to buy and sell manufacturing equipment. It seeks to be a prominent marketplace for industrial assets. Asseta has raised $597,400 on Wefunder.

Goldbely

Goldbely is an online marketplace that connects curious eaters with America’s best gourmet food purveyors. It seeks to create an alternative to the conglomerates that control most of the food world today. Goldbely has raised $3 million on Wefunder.

Unbabel

Unbabel is a crowd translation tool that combines translation software and mobile human editors. It seeks to provide a cheaper and more efficient online translation service for businesses. Unbabel has raised $888,400 on Wefunder.

It captures shopper behavior (both online and brick-and-mortar) at a variety of touch points to reward monetary and non-monetary engagements. SparkBase has raised $1.3 million on Fundable.

Moonfrye is a family creativity platform co-founded by former child TV star Soleil Moon Frye. It offers a free mobile photo app and interactive DIY projects shipped to the consumer’s doorstep. Moonfrye has raised $3.6 million on AngelList.

NetPlenish

NetPlenish is the developer of the ShopGenius online shopping tool. ShopGenius is a free browser plug-in that compares a site’s prices with those of other sites and accesses available coupons. NetPlenish has raised $1 million on AngelList.

Cratejoy

Cratejoy is a platform for merchants to launch their own subscription commerce business. In addition to subscriptions, Cratejoy also supports traditional shopping cart ecommerce purchases. Cratejoy has raised $1.3 million on AngelList.

Smart Traveler Marketing Services is an online travel-services company focused on deals for expiring travel inventories, such as resort rooms and cruise cabins. Smart Traveler Marketing Services has raised $500,000 on Crowdfunder.

Kueski is an online micro-lending service in Latin America. Users can apply for a small loan, specifying how much money they need and when they would like to pay it back. A response occurs within minutes, and users receive funds in approximately 55 minutes. Kueski has raised $1.3 million on Crowdfunder.
