Chart of the Week: China and U.S. are Top Internet Browsing Nations

Internet analysts comScore reported this month that worldwide unique visitors topped one billion for the first time in December 2008.

“Surpassing one billion global users is a significant landmark in the history of the Internet,” said Magid Abraham, President and Chief Executive Officer, comScore, Inc. “It is a monument to the increasingly unified global community in which we live and reminds us that the world truly is becoming more flat. The second billion will be online before we know it, and the third billion will arrive even faster than that, until we have a truly global network of interconnected people and ideas that transcend borders and cultural boundaries.”

In December, China passed the United States to become the nation with the most Internet users. China had 179.7 million users compared to just 163.3 million for the United States. But China also has a significantly larger population (1.3 billion) than the U.S. (303 million). As a percentage of the overall population, the United States still had far and away more Internet users. All told, western nations continue to outpace the developing world in terms of per capita Internet usage.
