Server Resolution, lots of prayers!!

I finally found a resolution to our server issue. We are staying with Aplus for right now since the issue has been addressed. We were having a huge problem with the speed of our site. When you clicked into our shopping cart, you went really slow, and then getting all the way through the checkout process was painfully slow. Aplus said we were utilizing a huge amount of their server resource, over 35%!

When we upgraded to miva 5, aplus left the full store of miva 4 on the server. I deleted all of those photo files, and turned off some of our newer modules, and voila! speedy server. Now I was informed that it wasn't a server space issue, ie, it didn't have anything to do with how much we had on our server, since we had plenty of space left to utilize. The newer modules I turned off were not even in use, so I can't believe that was the issue.

I guess the long and short of it was that I did a number of things to remedy the situation, and one of the things I did worked. According to aplus, Miva was making too many calculations using up the server resources. I still don't quite understand it.

I was not excited to switch servers, since everything we looked at was quite a bit more money. The server we have now offers us a free gateway, and is quite reasonable with a fairly comprehensive knowledge base, and a fully staffed tech support team (which I find frustrating to use!) but the resources are extensive. When I searched the alternative sites, they didn't seem to be nearly as polished as where we are now. That was a huge turn off. Bigger isn't always better, but I tend to find comfort in a larger organization.

There was a lot of praying at our office this week! Truly. It's been a really stressful three weeks, and Lee Ann and I have felt backed into a corner. Our slow server meant little to no sales for weeks. Thankfully, our sales have resumed but it wasn't instantaneous, it was slow for a while after we resolved the issue. I think because it takes a while for your customers to come back after they've had a bad experience shopping a site. We had a great salemail this week, and the products we highlighted were well-received, so we've done well. I've also changed some of our upsale offers, and made sure to update our cross selling by posting our clearance section and new greeting cards on all product pages. Something is working....Thank God!
