Forging Ahead With My New Host
Hello all. I'm Back! I had a great time visiting my mother. I took a break from the computer, cell phone, store and day job and played with yarn and spinning fiber. It's good to know that those things are still fun and waiting for me when I get this shopping cart and web site up and running. At this rate, I will be retired by then. Judging from my mother, that's no guarantee I will slow down though. I guess I'll just put that one on my list of things to do for now and motor on.
So, after vacation, I barely knew how to get my email. Just kidding, but I did have to spend a while sitting there warming to the glow of my monitor before I figured out where I was in this program. I was ready to ftp my files to my new host. My new host has a control panel that is what I call "bubble gummy". Cute icons that are big like the Reader's Digest large print version might be. So far though, it not only appears friendly but it has acted in a hospitable manner. Off to a good start.
Monday night it was time to ftp my files to the host server. I went to my control panel to "manage files". I tried to ftp from there but there is a size limit and it wasn't really ftp, it was php. The limit was 2MB.... this could take a while.... maybe even days. I didn't take the time to investigate how to ftp using my host as I didn't have time that night. But... my husband, observing from a distance, tells me I should be able to ftp without the control panel. Huh? Really? Hmmm....
So, off I go to Google to look for ftp methods. It took less than 30 minutes to find a lead. It turns out that if you have Windows XP, you can go to Internet Explorer, type ftp://yourftpsite.com into your address bar and it will bring up your files on the server..... just like that. I gave it a shot and sure enough, I typed into the address bar, hit enter and POOF, there were my files. It was almost spooky. Now I did have to put in my username and password but that was nothing.
Next I cut and pasted my folders and files from my computer to the server... I'm still amazed. Now they are out there and I can access them for editing and such.... wow!
So, basically, I'm back where I was a few weeks ago when I realized my old host would let my files reside on their server but I had to pay a hefty monthly fee and agree to a two year contract in order to actually access them. Now that I've worked around that obstacle, I still have to wonder why I'm doing this...??? Oh, yea, so I can play with yarn..;-)
Till next time, Sandy
