Deep End of the Pool
Hello again. It's been an interesting week with this new shopping cart, ASPDOTNETStorefront. I've been to Borders and picked up my Dummies book. ASP.NET 2.0, All-In-One Desk Reference. 8 books in 1..:-) I've read at least the first chapter but my husband has read more.... poor thing can't help himself.
Besides reading, I spent the first half of the week checking out the software by clicking around. The Admin Control Panel looks great. I have to admit that it feels a bit like I've moved into a rather large house with only my ratty old recliner and three-legged coffee table. I like the neighborhood but I still feel like an outsider...:-)
I've managed to set myself up with admin responsibilities so I believe my next task is to create a "skin". This will be what you see when you come to my online store to buy my yarn. This has caused me the most grief so far. Mostly freaking out and wondering if I can do this part. Just in case, I sent off a request for a quote on a custom skin... peace of mind. But I think I will be ok once I get past this hurdle..... another damn hurdle. Lots of file editing, cutting and pasting, at least according to the "Skinning Tutorial" provided with the software. This Skinning Tutorial is a real hoot. My best guess is it was written by a very angry college kid with lots of personal issues. I'm guessing he did ok at the computer geek stuff but he didn't do well in communications. Every sentence is ended with at least one exclamation point if not three. It is laced with comments and personal opinion that seems just a little on the unprofessional side to me... especially given the professional appearance of everything else related to this software... so far. And whatever you do, don't ask this guy about templatemonsters.com... not sure what the story is there but I can tell it was traumatic.
So, how is the "skin" for my web site coming along? I'm getting there. I've been following the exclamation points and working my way through cutting and pasting code and so far I've got part of my "old" (perspective... 3 months old) web page look to appear magically. I'm ok with this progress given my learning curve.
So, in my spare time, I try to belong to the St. Louis Weaver's Guild. I don't get to do much but I do attend the meetings. It's a very talented group and they always inspire me to at least dream, if I don't have time to do anything else. One of the guys there is a computer geeky software guy that has a very nice personal web site.... fantastic weaver by the way. After the meeting I approached him and asked him if he was at all familiar with ASP.NET. He recoiled until I was able to assure him I wasn't going to ask him for help. I gave him the Reader's Digest condensed version of how I ended up here. He looked at me very seriously and said, "You realize this is the deep end of the pool?" Ah, that explains all the gasping and gurgling...:-)
Till next time!!!
Sandy
