Moving Our Domain Name
Well, the title says it all for this week. It's time to move our site to a host that meets the requirements of the software we have purchased. When we had our demo of PDG Commerce installed, the guys at PDG had to do a little hoop jumping and make a few phone calls to EDT in order to get the software installed on EDTHosting. I'm not comfortable with my site staying there.
PDG recommends 1and1.com, among others, as a suitable host for their software. I've visited their site and I'm happy with their offering... like I am an expert. I can transfer my domain, hosting and eventually our blog to this site and have it all in one place. For now, it's getting hard to remember all of the user names and passwords. No comments about my age, please and thank you.
So, how does one go about transferring a domain name from GoDaddy to another registrar? I started by visiting 1and1.com and walking through the domain transfer process as if I were ready. I came to a point where they want an authorization number... huh? What's this and where do I get it? I go to GoDaddy and search their help screens. I find lots of stuff about transferring domains TO GoDaddy but nothing much about transferring AWAY from GoDaddy. Imagine that! Time to call.
I called GoDaddy and they were happy to send me the authorization number but... here comes the hook... since I have a "private" domain registration (they won't list my email and personal info in "whois") I have to contact domainsbyproxy.com to remove the "privacy" first.
Ok, how hard could it be? Well, you have to go to the site, and try to get your ID number... which has not been sent to you and is not the same as your GoDaddy customer number.... this gives me chills of joy... I can only imagine how much fun this is going to be...:-)
Let's see if I can remember the sequence of hoops I had to jump through to accomplish this. NOPE... again, no comments about age please and thank you. There were "forgotten passwords" and "retrieve ID".. typing in sequences of numbers provided by the site and checking emails for the information. It's all a blur. But, after about 30 minutes of clicking around, I was able to get my ID number, reset my password and.... the original mission... remove the "privacy" from my domain. Whew!
I am now armed with the information required to move my hosting and domain name to ONE host from the two that I have at the moment. I haven't done it yet. You know... J-O-B and weeks flying by in a race to the end of the year.
Onward and upward... I've also been tweaking the database spreadsheet I'm carrying on my flash drive... creating and assigning categories.... you realize this makes me the most boring person in the office.. turning down lunch offers... bummer. I still haven't made it to the step required to integrate PDG Commerce with our QBPOS. It's coming soon... stay tuned.
Till next time, Sandy
