SEO Mystery
Hello all. Well, it's SEO time. I'm still not happy with my site but will I ever be? I have to move forward with what I have for now. Some magical day in the future, when I have enough products out there to really shout about, I have some changes and improvements I would like to make to the site. But for now, with only one part time newbie at the switch, I have to motor on the best I can..... still lots of grunt work to do.
Since I'm thinking about promoting my site now, I stopped in Practical Ecommerce to read a few articles about SEO. I thought maybe it would help me. After all, I wasn't born with a working knowledge of SEO so I'm trying to learn about it. I know I need keywords and I've heard chit chat about page rankings and such. But when I saw the article that mentioned "long tail" dynamics (???), building my network in the blogoshpere (in my spare time), building a custom search engine (yea, I'll just whip that one right out), link baiting (is this going to be stinky?), and becoming a trusted contributor to Wikipedia, Digg, StumbleUpon, Netscape and Reddit (I'll get right on that).....my heart SANK.
I consider myself a fairly smart girl... most of the time. I have no idea what "long tail" dynamics even means. I didn't see an explanation so I can only assume that I've been lost in the dust here. I agree with the part about building a network. That's what we do every day in our brick and mortar store but honestly, the thought of spending every waking moment in the blogoshere is a little daunting..... when will I mow? On to link baiting.... will have to look that one up too.
I understand most of the concepts and agree with them, but I'm not sure how to fit that in to my life. I am but one small business trying to navigate the cyber world and not spend my entire life savings on a staff of web experts. Oh, and I would like to have some part of my life where I'm not staring at a computer screen....:-) If I'm going to dream here, might as well.
So, what am I going to do? I have to motor on... even if it's getting hard to breathe back here in the dust trail. It's getting a little lonely too. I'll keep reading my books and putting my wares out on the dusty cyber shelves. Someday, maybe I'll get to run with the pack?? Just keep dropping those bread crumbs for me...:-)
