Going Green
Going Green….
One of our company resolutions is to be greener in the New Year. Here are some things we are doing to reduce our impact on the environment.
Commuting. We are trying to use our cars less. If we have errands to do we make a plan to get everything done in one trip. With a little planning you can actually get more done in less time (and use less gas!)
Recycling – We now recycle all items that can be recycled. Nothing goes in the trash unless it absolutely has to. We try to think before we toss.
Reuse – We have always tried to reuse our shipping boxes, but now we are also saving packing material to use again. We use only blank Newsprint rolls for packing, not only is this cost-efficient but it can also be recycled by our customers.
No more water bottles! – We have all invested in a nice aluminum refillable water bottle. We also use personal travel coffee mugs for our Java or Tea in the morning. We hope to be carrying some really cute Monogrammed Travel Mugs in our store very soon!
Saving Energy – I used to just leave my computer on. It made it faster to start every day. Now we shut everything down, we even turn off the power strip at night. We also set our computers to go to sleep if they are inactive for longer than 45 minutes. We unplug our cell phone chargers when they are not in use too. We even replaced all of our light bulbs with Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs. ( I hope to see some savings on our electric bills at the end of the year!)
Saving Paper – We are making a conscious effort to stop using so much paper. Email and instant messaging make this easy, but we have also been backing up documents on a flash drive instead of printing them out. This not only saves paper, but also saves room in our file drawer!
I’m sure there is more that we can do to go Green and I would love to hear what you are doing to go Green in your business!

Great post! I encourage eBay sellers to ship green all the time! I created a web page called: GreenShippingRocks.com I write that on all my recycled packages that I ship in. Green Shipping does Rock for me! I've only bought tape in all my years of selling on eBay!

Another great idea is to join the TerraPass Carbon Balanced Business program and purchase carbon offsets. You can purchase credits to offset travel, server and commuting carbon emissions. TerraPass supports a portfolio of high quality independently validated projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. You can learn more at http://www.terrapass.com/business/. We've offset our carbon footprint two years in a row now for http://www.dezignsbyt.com/ and its something we can feel good about as a company.

There are more than enough reasons to go green these days. It used to be the case that this was not a profitable idea but now I think you can clearly use it to increase your bottom line. Saving energy is certainly the biggest one that you mentioned. Customers are starting to appreciate companies with a green philosophy so this can even help with your branding, customer retention and brand loyalty. Depending upon what type of products you are making, you can even try to carve out a "Green niche" for your product.
