Things are looking up : )
We have some new life to speak about.. THANK GOD! We have new customers coming into the site and things are looking up. I can't believe I get to write that... things are looking up : ) When you start to lose your business it really throws you into a funk. And when subsequent attempts to revive don't work.. an even bigger funk! We've had over a year of that. Could this be a trend? I don't even dare to type it. Our mailing list has grown, and that most definitely is why. I made the subscribe section more prominent on the site and in the weekly email I send out.
Whenever we see an upturn I never want to trust it, even if the traffic is increasing… by a very significant 25% off of our direct mail campaign. So not only are they subscribing, they are looking an average of 6 pages per visit. I don’t think that’s great. I’m guessing I need to work on some cross-selling on the site.
We are selling t-shirts! They really like our new designs. We have this new one that they love, and it says:
“I wake up each morning and gather my wits, grab a newspaper and check the obits. If I'm not there, I know I'm not dead. So I head out to breakfast in purple and red!" Author Unknown
This group of women love to laugh at themselves and take on life with great perspective. I enjoy them as customers.
Ahhhh.. but I need to come back to this nagging issue of 6 pages per visit. Where does that number fall in the grand scheme of things? How bad is that? Is it even bad? What do you do to make that number larger? I feel stupid asking that question,, after all, I have been at this for, what.. almost 5 years now? But my inclination has always been to cross-sell in the related products section. Am I missing something obvious? Does it just come down to products.. they like them, or they don’t? That’s about my average number over the years. Sometimes it’s a little higher. I don’t remember it lower.
The other way I thought of was to advertise on my own site, so to speak. It’s just another way of cross-selling. I put small advertisements on the left hand margin of my product pages in miva. I’m not tracking the click rate on it. I’m not sure I know how to since it’s on a miva page. I need to look into that.
6 pages says to me that they are only coming in to see what I am promoting which is highlighted on the home page so those folks coming off of the engines exhibit the same pattern. They aren’t interested in more really, and that’s mostly because my other products are old news. They click in, look at a couple of shirts, and if they don’t buy, they jump ship.
So I have new life on the site, but I need to make sure that I’m squeezing out every opportunity with these new folks. I feel like I have limited opportunities before they stop clicking in. I’m curious if anyone out there has more ideas to increase page views, or an opinion on how to interpret that number of 6 pages? I need to also keep them coming in. If they are only viewing 6 pages, will they be inclined to come back next time they get a promo? Let me know what you’re thinking! I appreciate hearing from you.
Until then I’m going to work on some of my own advertising within the site. Maybe it’s time to revisit those and update them? Hopefully that will make a difference and peak some interest. Let’s hope!! I’d love to continue on at this pace.
