Mom are you going to work on Christmas?
Mom are you going to work on Christmas?
This is the question I got before the holidays from the kiddos. They’ve been home on Christmas break and I’ve been working each day. We are busier than ever so I haven’t had much personal time lately. My answer was of course, no honey I will not be working on Christmas.
But looking at last year’s sales, we did have orders on Christmas Day and a few customer service phone calls and emails. When do you turn off of the phones, turn off the computers and just breathe? I know on Christmas Day I will turn everything off and focus all my attention on my family, but I also know that little spot in my brain will want to check my email or my voice mail and it will be bugging me to find out what is going on at the “office”.
One of the challenges of being a work at home mom, or a Mom-Preneaur as I prefer to call it, is trying to take a true “day off”. The children have needs, so does the hubby, then there’s the house, the pets and of course the business. Since starting my business I have been on a quest to find the perfect balance of everything. Some days I wish I had an office outside the home; you know the grass is always greener mentality. If I worked outside the home, maybe I could clock out at 5pm and then just be home with the family. But then one of the kids gets sick and I am thankful that they can rest at home, and I can be there to take care of them while not missing a beat at work.
Where is the balance? How do I teach my kids that hard work yields great success but shouldn’t come at the sacrifice of themselves or their families? If I work too much am I teaching them that work comes first, when truly it should be Family?
One of my personal goals for 2010 is to continue to work on this balance and try to find ways to show my children that I really can take a day off (and enjoy it).

Hi Kara! I told you in my comment of working without distraction that we must spare sometime for our family, not matter on a festival or some other special day. When it comes to choose from between business and family, definitely hard to reply. But as you have been saying you are mom as well as businessman so you have some responsibilities for your family as mom and other as a businessman. You have child and wants your love so give first priority to your family and I hope doing this will never disturb your business schedule.
