Kinda quiet in here these days. Lotta eyes, not so much with the typing. SO I cut a short promotional vid and will run it as a Google video ad starting this weekend (I hope). Nothing insane, but if successful I'll produce more.
I figured this might be an interesting topic for people as some might be curious about the process and results. I know I will be.
There's a preview up on my site, it's called 'summertime'
I'll update ya as I go.

Okay,
First impressions. If you are gonna start a video ad campaign on Google, allow for some lead time... I submitted my video ad last weekend, and it has yet to be approved. I did an online chat with a Googlite yesterday and was told, it was in processing.
Regular Adword campaigns can be fired up immediately, but videos and probably image ads need time for approval. Hopefully they'll get to it today and it will be up for the weekend.
My text Adword campaign is getting in front of lots of eyes 7k+ in a 4-ish days, but very limited clicks (like 6). So either my ad and it's variations suck, or I need to more narrowly target the audience that is seeing them. I was sure I picked some fairly strong keywords and phrases, but apparently not... And so goes the learning experience.
If anyone has their own story or any good input, grab the rope and hop into this tread.

Next thing I learned, there is no starting gun. So, leaving your CPM bid up at $5.00 will definably get some views when they turned the damn thing on. I went from 0 to 24,000 impressions in one day. So it works.
As opposed to paying per click, with a video ad, you can pay per 1000 'impressions'. It reports back how many folk saw your ad, played the video, and clicked through to the site. Very interesting. Lots and lots of DELETED, barely a clue what most mean...
Bottom line, still more sales from banners on Manufacturer's site. But I guess having the text ads and video ads out there helps with brand recognition. We'll see. As I get more #'s to look at, I'll report back how things are going. Though occasionally, I get the feeling that I'm yelling into an empty room here...

So it's been a few weeks, and I run the ad periodically most days of the week. Here's some of my thoughts. Video ads are obviously more expensive than text ads. They do get a fair amount of impressions, which I figure is good for brand/company recognition.
I find that the click rate (to the store not the actual play rate which is separate) is actually much higher on the text ads, almost 3x. Which surprised me. But I think the old rule of marketing, customers need to see something 3 times before they act may be in effect.
I picked the site the ad runs on by age/financial demographics. Since our product offerings are not targeted at the younger YouTube set. That said, we've actually gotten quite a few watches on Metacafe & YouTube. Not quite what a college girls gone wild video gets, but for a commercial video, not bad.
I think the affect can become cumulative. The more cool vid ads you produce, be they live action, animated or simple funny slide shows with music, the more the viewing public will become associated with your brand/store.
We shall see...
