I hate it, but I still design my pages to fit 800 x 600. The issue has not come up for a few years, but I actually had an issue where my client and old man was using a 15 inch monitor with that rotten resolution, and he wanted his font to me huge so he could read it, and his idea of big, was well...really big. Trying to explain the problems was like going in one ear and out the other.
Needless to say the site will never get into my portfolio.

While I understand that the typical web users is not an old man with poor vision requiring inch-tall fonts sizes, it is still important to understand that there are more and more older web users every day.
As far as building a portfolio, I would almost say that this is a perfect addition. If nothing else, and assuming you are proud of the work you did, it should illustrate your flexibility and your ability to get clients what they want. That being said, I haven't seen the site, but I can imagine it not being terribly portfolio-worthy.
Personally, I really like 770 pixel wide sites that are centered on the screen. I have a large monitor, but it is rare that I use the entire thing for my web browser. However, depending on the site that you are building this may not work. |

I too am the same. I've a big 20" screen but the web browser window is barely over half the screen.
I like a site centred nicely - just my personally views but then I've seen a lot of nice sites that maximise more of the screen. |

Sometimes you just have to be blunt with them and tell them that you need to design it for 99% of the people out there if they want it to be successful. That said, if you design it using CSS and a flexible layout, he could increase the font size to his heart's content and it wouldn't break the layout
BTW, we still design for 8x6 in most cases... over 25% of our visitors are still on it. |
