I am working on a website for a client with a luxury good. I have been researching sites for boutiques, jewelry and handbags and I've found that some sites have an e-commerce engine built right in and others have a link in the main nav that says shop online. That link opens a new window with the store.

Is there any other guide than preference as to what is a better solution?

A better solution is that which is more stable and reliable. If you can hire professionals to write an integrated shop for you — that's great, it's definitely better. But having a tiny budget, it's better to buy a ready shopping cart system as try to adapt it to an existing site as much as possible. Just choose the system that's easier to wrap in custom templates...

Hi Popkit,

It seems that each site has its own unique demands.

After building several custom shopping carts for clients, it never ceases to amaze me how each client has their own little ways they want things done - what will work best for their existing operation.

Hope you find the best solution possible!

Hi both of you who helped me... I actually had to make an educated guess... After lots of research, I decided that most who don't integrate the store are those who are buying a shopping cart solution and tacking it on to their existing site. That's my guess anyhoo. For the project I designed, we opted to blend it all together which is nice and streamlined.
