I'm a bit surprised at all the glowing reviews. I should have called previous clients to get feedback before we signed. I can't imagine all of them were 5-star-satisfied. The graphic designs that they provided were sub-par and seemed hastily thrown together. Maybe they have a better designer now, I don't know. On the development side of Magento everything fell apart. They seemed very competent technically, but extremely disorganized and almost immature. How would you rate a company that took over a year to develop a site that should have taken 3-4 months? Maybe we should have pestered them or threatened breach of contract to light a fire under their butts but that really isn’t my style. They could definitely use some better listening, time management, and organizational skills. It seemed like they never had an interest in understanding our needs but just wanted to whip together a website.

We have since contacted over 30 different Magento developers to re-do our site, essentially starting over from scratch. Here are some lists of developers

The web design industry is pretty pathetic. About 40% of the companies we contacted either never got back to us on sales inquiries or took a week to reply to emails or phone calls inquiring about doing business with them. Of the ones that we did contact, several would not look at any project under $70,000, and when asked what makes their sites worth 3 or 4 times the cost of others, they remarkably had no answer. Paying more for a “high end” company doesn't mean you get a better site. The snobbish high end firms are just making more money. Many of them claim to have onshore (US) developers but in reality they are offshoring development to India, Eastern Europe, and China. Actually more than half of the companies we called develop off-shore to keep costs down. This isn’t a bad thing, just a fact. We eventually decided to start over from scratch. We went with two different companies, one for the graphic design and user interface design, and another for backend development.

Since this is a review of Blue Acorn I should mention that their rates were by comparison fairly inexpensive, and I think their developers are all in the US.

We worked with Blue Acorn on the redesign of our website and have been thrilled with the outcome! The design and functionality of our site was a huge upgrade but as impressive as this was the real kicker was how fast our new site picked up after the launch.
