Must hire a developer?
My experience with Miva is mixed. Certainly they've been around for a long time and they seem to have lots of good customers. But I used them once a number of years ago and the Miva developer (unrelated to Miva itself) was a joke. Miva itself is a good company, but at the time you had to hire a developer to implement it. That's my only gripe.

Best Ive used in years.
Ive used a handful of carts as well as having poured over reviews and user comments for months on end. Have been using Miva Merchant for almost a year now. Their support and service has been amazing and the community is very helpful too. Conversion rates went up significantly once we ported our stores over to Miva and I have had no trouble whatsoever running them since.

Customizable and Secure
I've been using Miva Merchant since late 1999, so I've been around the block with the software, so to speak. Miva Merchant 5.5, the latest version of the shopping cart, is powerful in terms of both features and extensibility. The front-end UI can be completely customized using the template features of the cart. And the fact that the cart is NOT open-source means that it's very secure. Speed is great, and the MySQL backend is wonderful.

Built for serious & professional businesses
I've been developing and maintaining MIVA websites for almost 10 years now. I'm a curious techie and always have a need to test out new software. I started with MIVA and have jumped around to explore other systems like Zen Cart, osCommerce, Magento, x-cart and several others. Each time, I find myself right back with MIVA, especially with the release of version 5.
The problem with other platforms is that you need to understand advanced template systems and upgrading the open source systems is a nightmare once you've customized it. MIVA is all web based and easy to use once you are familiar with where things are. It's secure too, as all updates are automatically pushed out to your cart with one click. The add-on module development and support community is deep and helpful and just about every expansion you would need for an online store is available.
The money you save on using some free open-source system is not nearly worth what you will lose in time and frustration developing your business. Start with the right system and you will save many hours down the road when you realize you are spending all your time trying to fix the cart and upgrade it instead of running your business. It's frustrating to hear people say it's difficult to use if you are not a developer.
My question to them would be, why are you developing your site without a developer? If you are trying to build your online business all by yourself without a developer, then you are kidding yourself about having a successful business. It's the equivalent to trying to be your own dentist. Your business will never grow past your basic knowledge of web development. MIVA Merchant is for serious businesses that intend to grow with a shopping cart system that will handle that growth.

Easiest to use for individuals and developers
I've tried dozens of shopping carts since 1995 and only Miva Merchant allows complete control of look and feel without custom programming. Other carts either limit control or require programming knowledge, usually PHP.
With its third party modular structure, just about every feature you could want is available for Miva Merchant at ridiculously low prices, easy to install. By using a standardized system, you end up with a site that isn't dependent on one developer who customized it to keep it going.
Of course, I'm biased. I've dedicated my career to Miva Merchant at this point and have created a tutorial site that makes using and modifying Miva Merchant even easier. But that only proves my belief in Miva Merchant's long term viability and success.
