Chart of the Week: Facebook Gaining On MySpace in Advertising Revenue

In the battle for more than $1.1 billion in social media advertising dollars, Facebook is gaining ground on MySpace according to a leading Internet research firm.

Although Facebook is the leader in site traffic, MySpace has been more effective at monetizing its social networking site, earning it about $585 million and $495 million in advertising revenues for 2008 and 2009 respectively, according to eMarketer.

But Facebook, which had estimated advertising revenues of $210 million in 2008 and $230 million in 2009, has been gaining ground on MySpace in terms of social network advertising market share.

“Facebook, once a distant second to MySpace, has outperformed its rival in nearly every measure of usage—and is on track to surpass MySpace in ad spending by 2011,” said eMarketer Senior Analyst Debra Aho Williamson.
