Chart of the Week: Number of Affluent Households Fell in 2008

The total number of U.S. households with a net worth of more than $500,000 fell some 5.1 percent in 2008, after peaking in the prior year.

“Due to economic pressures, the number of affluent households in the U.S. … dropped last year, falling from 16.4 million in 2007 to 15.6 million in 2008,” reported eMarketer based on information from TNS Media Intelligence.

In 2007, American affluence reach a peak, as most Americans enjoyed a time of unprecedented financial growth which was larger than the dot com boom of the last decade. Unfortunately, as the economy cycled into recession, many households lost net worth.
