The publisher Scholastic is an excellent model for how a brand can make good use of Pinterest. All their boards focus on books in some way, such as "Bookish Bedrooms," "Book Art," and "Bling for Bookworms," making it a haven for book lovers. Their "Beautiful Bookshops" and "Libraries We Love" boards are not only of interest to book lovers, but also help promote goodwill among booksellers and librarians, two key front line groups for publishers. Even their boards promoting their own products are either fun, such as their Harry Potter board, or helpful, like their "Classroom Ideas" board. (Note: I'm not affiliated with Scholastic, but just enjoy following them on Pinterest, and admire the way they use the site). http://pinterest.com/scholastic/

This is a great post, since we look all the time for ways to best use this really cool social channel. For my company, Hipcycle.com, which specializes upcycled products, we have seen our followers on Pinterest grow at a much faster rate than on either Twitter or Facebook, and we're pretty proud of what we are doing on those channels. While we feature Hipcycle products on Pinterest, we also try to educate and share about upcycling in general. Check it out: http://pinterest.com/hipcycle/

What's very cool is that Pinterest doesn't have to be just products. Think business services. How can you share non-tangible services on Pinterest? Easy - reports, infographics, images of employees working on greatness, etc. It's only a matter of time before Pinterest is bought...for a lot.
