7 SaaS Subscription-billing Solutions, for 2016

My 2012 article, “9 SaaS Subscription-Billing Solutions,” garnered many comments and requests for an update. So with this post, I am providing a new list of providers. This is not a comprehensive list and excludes solutions that work only with certain platforms. Companies that do not make their pricing publicly available are not included.

Chargebee

Chargebee allows your customers to access and manage all their subscriptions. The company offers four plans that incorporate invoicing, payments, and subscriptions. The basic plan accommodates 100 invoices for $59 a month with a 50-cent charge per invoice for overages. The standard plan allows for 200 invoices and three company users for $99 a month. The 50-cent charge for each invoice overage applies. Only one payment gateway is allowed.

The pro plan accommodates 600 monthly invoices for $199 a month with a 30 cent per invoice overage charge. It includes 25 users, unlimited payment gateways and sophisticated SaaS metrics. The enterprise offering includes all the pro features with unlimited users for $399 a month. All plans include dunning for automatic payments. Chargebee does not yet provide for currencies other than the U.S. dollar.

ChargeOver

ChargeOver allows its users to create an unlimited number of plans with custom billing methods and schedules. Users can set up recurring flat rates, installment plans, and limited billing cycles. It integrates with QuickBooks recurring payments and Xero recurring payments.

The starter package accommodates up to 50 customers for $65 per month. The basic package allows for 51 to 150 customers for $115 a month. The professional package for 151 to 500 customers is $229 a month. All the options include one payment gateway.

FastSpring

SaaSy, one of the previous providers we covered, has been merged into FastSpring, which offers multi-currency support, international tax collection and management, refund management, and branded order pages. Automated dunning services are included. The company also offers a wide array of developer tools and customization options.

Pricing is 5.9 percent plus 95 cents per transaction or 8.9 percent per transaction with a minimum fee of 75 cents. Enterprise companies can call for a custom price quote.

Invoicera

Subscription billing is one of 13 features in the invoice management suite from Invoicera. It might be more than what most small businesses require.

The classic pricing plan is $20 a month for 100 clients but only 15 automatic recurring billings and five users. The business plan is $40 a month for an unlimited number of clients, 100 recurring billings, and ten users. The $100 a month infinite plan has no limits on the number of clients, recurring billing, or users.

PayWhirl

PayWhirl offers embedded widgets so customers can paste an embed code on their websites to activate a checkout without having to use a third-party payment portal. The product provides customer intelligence metrics and recurring revenue statistics.

The business pro offering is $49 a month with a two percent transaction fee. The business plus plan is $149 a month with a one percent transaction fee. The business ultimate plan costs $249 a month with a .5 percent transaction fee. All plans accommodate an unlimited number of customers.

Subscription DNA

Subscription DNA ties into one payment gateway for automated credit card processing using secure token payment systems.

Subscription DNA includes a secure subscriber portal that allows members to manage their own subscriptions, account profile, and payment methods. For advanced implementations, its web services API allows users to develop their own solution.

The company’s basic package starts at $99 per month. The company offers both a tiered monthly plan, and a blend of per transaction fees and fixed fees. The startup, small, and enterprise level pricing varies depending on the number of users and subscription cost. The standard tier is $199 per month for up to 350 users.

Zoho

Among its many products, Zoho offers subscription billing both as a standalone product and one that integrates with its other tools. It works with several payment gateways and provides hosted payment pages and multi-currency support. Zoho also supplies subscription metrics and automatic dunning. Pricing is $29 per month for 500 customers and three users and $69 per month for unlimited customers and users.

Was recurly considered or reviewed? They were built because other solutions at the time didn’t exist.

    • Marcia Kaplan May 11, 2016 Reply

Recurly was reviewed in the first article in 2012. Click the link in the first line of this article to see the previous article.

What about Idosell Shop- we believe it is worth to be reviewed since this is whole e-commerce ecosystem. 15 years on market.

    • Marcia Kaplan May 12, 2016 Reply

Idosell Shop does not offer subscription services which is the subject of this article.

Did you happen to check out BlueSnap? CNPExpo 2015 customer and judges choice award winner against all the subs engine platforms

    • Marcia Kaplan May 12, 2016 Reply

      Joe:

I did look at BlueSnap but it is primarily a payment gateway.

Hi Marcia! Thanks for the review! We have recently introduced a bunch more native integrations between our subscription billing product and other apps. SalesForce is currently in its final beta stage with a pool of our customers. It will be generally available soon. Email us if you would like access now.

Is this list a joke?? Zuora, Aria, Recurly?? Zuora is the leader in the Forrester report. None of the listed companies are viable subscription billing management solutions.

    • marcia Kaplan May 12, 2016 Reply

The purpose of this article was to provide other alternatives to those companies reviewed in the previous article. All three of the companies you mentioned were included in the prior article.

    • Charles August 23, 2017 Reply

I agree with Gavin. I don’t know much about Aria but Zuora and Recurly are very well known with SaaS subscription billing solution. And how about other providers like Braintree and stripe ?

Charles: Look at the original article. Zuora and Recurly were reviewed. Click the link in then first line of the article.

Great follow up post, but personally, I think it provides a false impression of the landscape. Many of the players from the 2012 post such as Chargify, Zuora, and Recurly have stood the test of time and become leaders in the current SaaS billing market. If you take this for face-value, it seems like these are the core companies in the space which isn’t the case.

To create a more comprehensive list, I would have led with the 2012 companies that are still around (even just a bulleted list), and then transitioned into the new players since 2012 post was written…

Great article, we believe Earth Skater requires mention as a Recurring billing solution based on Authorize.net AIM & CIM, allowing for very flexible subscriptions, and Earth Skater has no additional transaction fees. Please visit http://www.earthskater.com/pricing to learn more.

Or people can just choose the right shop system which has functionalities except payments as their default functionality… Check out Shopware, they were at the InternetRetailing Expo this year and are launching their business in UK now.. Here a Magento vs. Shopware comparison: http://www.s0y.com/magento-vs-shopware.php

Hey! A good list though, but I think you should also include some other subscription based billing solutions like Monexa and RackNap. Monexa supports customization of plans and pricing. It gives free trials as well.
RackNap is also a Recurring billing management platform which supports any type of billing cycle and customized pricing plans. It gives end-to-end automation as well. You can read about them here:
    Monexa: http://www.monexa.com/ RackNap: http://www.racknap.com/
You should choose a platform that offers you maximum scalability, flexible user interface and complete automation.

Thanks for putting together this list, Marcia! I’d like to propose Avangate to this list as well, as a comprehensive “one stop shop” for software and SaaS companies. With over 4000 customers, and a global presence – they should be on the shortlist in my opinion. Thanks for your consideration.
