Effectively managing a Twitter account can sometimes be a chore. It’s difficult to keep up with followers, steer clear of spam, or know if your Twitter engagement is paying off in ways that are meaningful to your business.

Here is a list of ten Twitter tools that can help in all those respects. It includes tools to analyze your Twitter reach, find and follow relevant Twitter users, filter and curate content, optimize and manage posting activity, and reduce spam.

Twellow, which promotes itself as “The Twitter Yellow pages,” is a directory of public Twitter accounts, with hundreds of categories and search features designed to help users find others to follow. Though Twellow is overly laden with advertising, which clutters the interface, it is a useful tool to find new followers based on category or geographic location.

Registered users can create a profile in Twellow to highlight their expertise, skills and business interests. Links to other social networks where users maintain a presence can be added, as well.

BirdHerd is designed to be used by companies that have several people designated to update a single Twitter account. Each person is assigned his or her own log-in credentials, so there is no sharing of a single username and password.

BirdHerd does not provide its own Twitter client, but can be used with whichever one the user is comfortable with: TweetDeck, HootSuite, or Twitter.com, for example. The user simply sends a direct message — i.e., “DM” — to the group account and BirdHerd manages the post.

Hey – I wanted to suggest another tool to this excellent list.

Pluggio (http://plugg.io) is one of the best Twitter management tools for profile / community management. It does the jobs of several applications, so you can use a single streamlined one vs. juggling 4-5 different applications to do different things.

It’s a huge timesaver, and I my audience of followers started growing immediately when I started using it.

I use http://followerfilter.com/ for Searching User- Tweet RT and Favorite listing and deletion – Unfollower finding an deletion. Even the site is new, it works well!

Site also allows you to see any twitter user’s (included yours) unfollowers, followers and followings without login.

Of course it’s free and unlimited!
