First quarter 2009 U.S. ecommerce sales growth were flat compared to first quarter 2008, an improvement over the prior quarter when for the first time ecommerce sales had constricted.
Total ecommerce sales growth has slowed in recent quarters due to the global economic recession. Prior to Q3 2008, ecommerce sales had mostly enjoyed double-digit, year-over-year growth, according to Internet tracking and measurement firm comScore.
"Although online retail spending growth was flat in the first quarter, this does represent a slight improvement over the disappointing fourth quarter," explained comScore chairman, Gian Fulgoni. "These results would appear to indicate that the economy is finally exhibiting some signs of stability, and with consumer confidence beginning to improve, I’m optimistic that the online channel is poised for a return to positive growth in the second half of 2009."
Fulgoni's predictions are good news for many in the ecommerce business.
